As a builder it’s my aim to make sure my customers are 100% happy at the end of every renovation I do, renovating can be quite a stressful time for a family so here are my top 5 tips to streamline your next reno.

1 – DO YOUR RESEARCH

One of the most critical stages of any building work is the design and planning stage. Spend lots of time looking through magazines, catalogues and online. Create a scrapbook or make a Pinterest board to bring all your design ideas into one place. This way when you meet with your builder He can easily see your vision and your style.

2 – HAVE A PLAN

This can be as rough as a sketch in an exercise book or as elaborate as professionally drafted plans (your builder should even offer to draw up plans for you) but most importantly get it on paper. Builders love plans! Once something is on paper it can’t be disputed and it minimises misunderstandings with your tradesmen.

3 – DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS

There is no such thing as a silly question! So if you don’t understand a technical detail or something looks out of place, speak up! Make sure you allow time each day to check in with your builder, raise any concerns you may have and he can keep you up to date with progress.

4 – STICK WITH THE PLAN

This is where the time spent in the planning stage pays off. If you decide to change plans during the job you can end up doing things twice, paying more than you thought and adding time to the job. This isn’t to say you can’t change your mind but the sooner the builder knows the better!

5 – GIVE THE TRADIES SOME ROOM

Like I said, renovating can be stressful, so the last thing you want is not being able to shower or sleep in a clean bed. It’s a great idea to organise with a relative or a friend for a backup place to stay during the work or even just for a warm bath while your own bathroom is pulled to pieces.

At the end of the day: To achieve your vision you’ll want to work with a builder you are comfortable with and can trust.
